Screening method to detect difenoconazole and cyproconazole in soils

Cyproconazole (CYP) and difenoconazole (DIF) are triazole fungicides widely used in agricultural areas. They are applied to protect plants against fungal pathogens through ergosterol inhibition and by negatively impacting soil microbial diversity, particularly bacterial populations, highlighting the need for residue monitoring. In this study, an easy method was developed and validated to determine these residues in soils. The soil samples were extracted with a methanol:water solution and injected directly into the liquid chromatograph with an ultraviolet detector. The method showed a limit of quantification of 0.2 mg kg-1 for both CYP and DIF, and the associated uncertainty reached a maximum of 11.5%. Residues of these compounds were not quantitated in the soil samples tested. The technique is inexpensive, easy to execute and could be applied as a screening method.
